Current teaching series

Each term we follow a different teaching topic as the theme for our Sunday morning services.

Spring 2026 - Lasting Words from the Last Supper (John 13-17)

This spring we are back in the gospels – this time spending the whole term focusing on just a few hours of Jesus' life.

I am sure that most of us are familiar with the idea of slow motion. Whether it is an amazing slip catch in cricket, a winning backhand down the line at Wimbledon or a frog catching a fly with its tongue. We are used to seeing these kinds of images on the television and now, thanks to technology the cameras on our phones can capture all sorts of events and play them back in slow motion.

When it comes to the gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke and particularly John go into slow motion when it comes to the final week, and the final few days of Jesus’ life before the crucifixion. This spring we’re going to be looking at John’s account of the Last Supper. Out of John’s 21 chapters, five are dedicated to these few hours, with the next four covering the next few days. The second half of John’s gospel covers the events from Palm Sunday onwards. This is the author’s equivalent of going into slow motion.

John clearly wants us to take note. To read carefully. To pay attention. So that is what we are going to do. This series will cover John 13-17 as we listen to Jesus’ conversation with his disciples, as he seeks to prepare them for what is about to happen to him. Jesus knows he only has a few hours left before his death, and of all the things that he could say, he chose to say these things. So, let’s draw up a chair and listen in on the conversation.
