Each term we follow a different teaching topic as the theme for our Sunday morning services.

Autumn 2025 - Jonah and the minor prophets (part 1)

This autumn we are going back to the Old Testament – and starting to fill in some of the gaps! Although we have looked at Isaiah and Jeremiah there were several other prophets who wrote much shorter books. We often call these the Minor Prophets. The ‘minor’ doesn’t mean they are less important – they are simply shorter than the ‘major’ prophets, Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezekiel. In the Hebrew Bible this collection is known as the ‘Book of the Twelve’ as these individual prophets were collected together and preserved as a single scroll.

Although Daniel does contain some prophecy it is included as a part of the Writings in the Hebrew Bible. The Hebrew Bible is divided into the Law, the Prophets and the Writings. Also, within the Hebrew Bible, Joshua, Judges, Samuel and Kings are called the Former Prophets with Isaiah etc called the Latter Prophets.

Each of these prophets fits within their own specific context. We’re going to be looking at some of them this year and the rest next year. It is important to understand something of their context when trying to work out how their message then applies to us now. But their role was often to warn the people of Israel or Judah that if they carried on the way they were going then God’s judgement
was coming and they would be taken into exile. Although there was sometimes prophecy in the sense of prediction – they were also bringing the word of God – reminding the people of what God had already said back in the Torah: if you do this, then you will…but if you do that, then…
