Sermon on the Mount
Whilst all of the Bible is inspired by God and is useful to us as we seek to follow Jesus - I think it is OK to say that there are some passages that are more important to us than others.
God has given us the whole of the Bible - and therefore it is all important. I'm not saying that there are some bits we don't need to read or meditate on. But imagine for a moment that you only had access to a few chapters from the whole of the Bible. I think it is fair to say that if we only had access to Matthew 5-7, a passage known to many as the Sermon on the Mount, we would have a fairly good grasp of the kind of life that Jesus lived and the values that he thought were important. We would know what the life of a Jesus follower should look like. Whilst some chapters from Leviticus or Judges help to paint the over arching story of the Bible, I hope you'd agree that if they were all we had we'd not have a very accurate picture of the life of a disciple.
In 2024, alongside some great resources from the Bible Project, we were encouraged to spend time meditating on and thinking about the Sermon on the Mount. Some of us even set about memorising this whole passage - Matthew 5-7.
This was such a helpful practice that we're being encouraged to that again in 2025. The Bible Project resources are still available via their website and app. Each week the next few verses will appear on our social media channels. You'll also find the whole of the passage here on this page.
One of the best ways to stick at this discipline is to do it with someone else. So find a friend and commit to learn together.
